Earlier this year progressive jazz trio The Bad Plus shared the bittersweet news that founding member Ethan Iverson would be parting ways with the group at the end of this year, with pianist Orrin Evans replacing him beginning next year. This fall we welcome back The Bad Plus for what will be the final DC performance for the band’s original lineup. The intensely collaborative trio has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. After four albums focused almost exclusively on original compositions, It’s Hard marks the band’s return to very thing that first made The Bad Plus famous: the deconstruction of songs from the Pop/Rock and R&B worlds. As Rolling Stone describes them “It’s about as badass as highbrow gets.”
An all-star jazz lineup of drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Larry Grenadier, keyboardist John Medeski, and guitarist John Scofield comes together to celebrate their musical histories and Jack’s 75th birthday year in a tour de force of creative interplay. They call themselves Hudson; a moniker derived from the Hudson River Valley, the region where all four bandmates live in upstate New York. Each an established performer in his own right, DJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski, and Scofield have displayed versatility and range across the genres of jazz, funk, rock, and soul. We expect the night will not be short on magical & mind-blowing musical moments with this group performing together. Their tour stops in DC here at The Hamilton Live on Tuesday, October 10.
